Habitable Zone

Habitable Zone

The conditions on Earth were optimal for the evolution of life as we know it. But which conditions play a role? If the earth were much closer to the sun, it would be considerably warmer. Or vice versa: if the earth were farther away from the sun, it would be considerably colder. This would have influences on life on earth.

The zone which is favorable for life is also called the habitable zone. The connection between the distance of a planet to its sun, the temperature and the life-friendliness is explored in this experiment.

Shopping list / materials needed

  • Light source or red light therapy lamp or candle
  • Bluetooth low energy (BLE) mouse
  • Smartphone or sensor
  • Attachment for smartphone or sensor
  • Optional: ruler for easy execution without mouse.

The materials mentioned are exemplary and represent only a selection of possible items.

Experimental set-up and procedure

The red-light therapy lamp is placed on one edge of the table. Then the sensor (the smartphone) is attached to the BLE mouse. The corresponding experiment is opened in phyphox via the QR code. The mouse and sensor are then connected to the smartphone and the lamp is switched on. The mouse and sensor are aligned with the light source so that the light sensor looks at the lamp. The measurement is started and then the mouse is first moved away from the lamp (increasing distance). The measurement is stopped, and the graph is discussed. Additionally, in a second measurement, the mouse and sensor can be moved back towards the lamp (decreasing distance).

Alternative(s)

The experiment can be performed in a simple form with an Android smartphone (or only with a sensor) without a mouse. A ruler is also required here. The ruler is placed in line with the light source so that the zero is in one plane with the edge of the lamp. Then individual measurements are taken every x centimeters. The result is drawn in the notebook and the curve is discussed.
