Understanding Stellar Evolution Playfully — Design of the Board Game 'Staub und Sterne'

Staub und Sterne ("Dust and Stars") is a board game in which players move stellar material through the stages of the stellar life cycle — from molecular cloud through main sequence, red giant, and ultimately to white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole, depending on mass. This article describes the pedagogical design of the game, its classroom testing, and the evidence for learning gains in understanding stellar evolution sequences.
